YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO FIND THE ND’S POWER OUTLET TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE. GO.
My service manager and one of our former techs have a friendly bet that he cannot find the power outlet (lighter socket for your phone charger or radar detector) in the new Miata in less than 5 minutes. I cheated and looked in the parts catalog and HOLYHELLWHYDIDTHEYHIDEITTHERE.
Y’alls five minutes are way up, but RamblinRover got it:
Under/behind some kind of cover in the passenger footwell?
It’s attached to the bottom left of the heater case under the dash on the passenger side. Once I am able to get IN the new car I will post proof.

glove box, center console, sides of center console, bottom of the seat

Buried in the center console, or buried under the center stack forward of the gear-stick are my guesses.

One of these general regions.
![]() 08/07/2015 at 11:53 |

There's probably two. One in the center console, and one in the cubby in the back under the HVAC

Only one. Neither location.

under the seat

I remember for a spell Ford was putting them on the side of the center console in the passenger footwell. Is Mazda doing that now?

The Miata’s glovebox is between the rear seats...... so no.

Edit: Fuck it, you win. It’s attached TO THE HVAC CASE in the passenger footwell under the dash

Really long entension cord?
![]() 08/07/2015 at 12:01 |

Isn’t it like, in front of the glove box? By your feet or knees or something?
Actually wait, that’s technically not right either, since there isn’t any glove box. So by the passenger’s legs?

Behind the nav/stereo screen?
![]() 08/07/2015 at 12:04 |

In any case I’d probaly use one of the 2 USB’s in front of the shifter

That was covered the other day... there isn’t one, besides the button on the key fob/release switch on the lid, and the emergency release beneath some panels on the inside of the cabin.

The power outlet being somewhere stupid is much less of an issue since there are a couple USB ports right in front of the shifter.
Not sure what that goofy trapezoid bin on the side is, is that maybe where they stashed the actual 12v outlet?
![]() 08/07/2015 at 12:35 |
|
You need to charge your phone. “What do you do? What do you do?”
![]() 08/07/2015 at 12:38 |

That’s where the cupholder can attach. Forward of that under the dash is the outlet.

![]() 08/07/2015 at 12:41 |

I guess they figured since most people already have USB cables for their various gizmos that the USB ports should get the prime real estate. For me, it’d be totally fine. This is what lives in my power outlet (I never charge 3 things at the same time but I got this one because all of its ports are high-amperage).

Jeesus christ that’s unbelievable. How is that even practical in any way except when manufacturing it.
When you get your hands on, please tell us how easy it is to plug something in knowing where it technically is. Because it’s probably not visible unless you lie down.

I will. And I am not a small man.

How long does someone’s arm have to be to use that from the driver’s seat? This just seems ridiculous, given all the other reasonable places automakers have stashed this piece. But like AtlasM said, USB ports can function just as well, for most.

Has USB inputs right? That's how I charge mine
![]() 08/07/2015 at 17:07 |
|
Yeah it has two ahead of the shifter in the little cubby.
![]() 08/07/2015 at 17:08 |
|
I couldn’t reach it. Not even close. You’d have to make sexy time with the steering wheel and contort your arm around the shifter to even get a finger near it.

So not necessarily the worst place because you have 2 USB ports that most devices use these days
